Remember when you were a teenager and you dreamed of being a grown-up—with your own car, fabulous clothes, and clear skin? Little did you know that acne can follow us well into adulthood. If you’re dealing with adult acne, it might be time to break a few unhealthy skin habits.
Stop touching your face. Right now. Are you resting your chin in your hand while you read this? It’s such an ingrained habit, most of us don’t even realize when we’re doing it. How many times a day do you think you touch your face? This can be a hard habit to break, but it’s worth it for clear skin—not to mention your health, since rubbing your eyes or nose can be a surefire way of spreading germs. The first step is awareness. Start to notice when you touch your face. Catching yourself in the act will help you break the habit.
Clean your glasses…and your face. Glasses—and sunglasses—are a necessity for some, but they can lead to acne on the nose and near the ears. When you wear glasses, oil, dead skin, and dirt can collect on the skin and clog the pores beneath the frames. To avoid glasses-associated breakouts, keep your frames clean and be sure to thoroughly clean the skin that comes into contact with the glasses.
Ditch the bangs. Your bangs may look great, but if you’re prone to acne, they are a recipe for disaster. Find a hairstyle that won’t result in forehead acne.

Lack of sleep is annoying and might lead to a few uncomfortable situations, like counting sheep or drinking more caffeine than usual.
Keep hair products in your hair and away from your face. This may seem obvious—until the next time you’re spritzing hairspray and you notice how much of it lands on your face. Hair products are excellent for styling hair—and blocking pores. Apply products with your fingers or shield your face when you spray.
Stop the sweat. Don’t stop sweating—exercise is critical to our health—just stop the sweat from collecting on your face. Sweat can contribute to clogged pores. Pull your hair back into a ponytail or wear a headband while you exercise. If you can’t hit the showers immediately after exercise, at least rinse your face or use a face wipe.
Pick the right products. Many skin care products—including sunscreen—can clog pores and lead to acne. Look for water or mineral-based products that are labeled noncomedogenic.
