Singing for Survivors

Jewel lends her voice to raise awareness about reconstruction options.

Fans know singer-songwriter Jewel as an artist whose songs describe stories of the love, pain, and power that drive women’s lives. Now Jewel is contributing her passion for helping other women by joining forces with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) to help raise awareness about breast reconstruction. In addition to appearing in a public service announcement and hosting a benefit concert, she has written a song, “Flower,” the proceeds of which will benefit breast reconstruction patients. Here, Jewel describes her motivation to become involved with this issue.

Why did you want to become involved in this effort to educate women about breast reconstruction options?
I was shocked to hear that 70 percent of women who are eligible for breast reconstruction surgery are not properly informed of their options. A significant improvement in self-esteem and quality of life is attributed to breast reconstruction following mastectomy. This is such an important message for all women to hear. When they approached me to help spread the word about this campaign, I was honored to lend my voice.

How do you hope your involvement will help and inspire women?
I hope that women will become part of this campaign by empowering themselves with information on this topic and gaining a better understanding of a survivor’s options for reconstructive surgery.

Do you have a personal connection to breast cancer?
I haven’t been personally afflicted, but I’ve known friends and loved ones who have suffered from the disease. Breast cancer touches and affects everyone. Everybody knows someone who has or will have it.

In your experience as part of this campaign, what have you learned to this point, or how have you been inspired?
The strength, beauty, and resilience of women everywhere continue to inspire me. Cancer doesn’t discriminate, and women must do all they can to be their own healthcare advocates. The way to do this is to be informed of the options that are available.  _
